Turning 65?
If you’re turning 65 or beyond, it’s time to enroll in Medicare part A and part B. Read below for more information on when and how you can enroll, as well as what to expect when your coverage begins.
When can I enroll?
You can first enroll in Medicare during your initial enrollment period, which includes the three months prior to your birth month, the month in which you were born and the three months after. Some people are automatically enrolled in Medicare – to learn more about automatic enrollment or for
information on how to enroll, visit our “How to Enroll in Medicare” page.
What if i miss my initial enrollment period?
It’s important to sign up for Medicare during your seven-month initial enrollment period, otherwise, you could be charged late penalties that increase the longer you wait to enroll. For a full list of enrollment periods, visit “What Is Open Enrollment?”.
When does my coverage begin?
If you enroll in Medicare in one of the three months before your 65th birthday, your coverage will start on the first day of the month you turn 65.
If you enroll during the month of your 65th birthday or one of the three months after, your coverage will begin on the first day of the month after the month that you enrolled.
You will receive a welcome packet in the mail with your Medicare card shortly after your coverage begins.
